Force programs to run maximized

Windows has a habit of running programs in half window mode and clicking on maximize every time is quite troublesome. Here is an easy way to solve the problem. Right click on the affected program's shortcut or start menu entry and click on properties. If the shortcut tab hasn't already opened, navigate to it. Click the drop down menu next to run and choose maximize. Finally click on ok to save your changes. Just remember, it has to be the program short and not the main program executable.

Customize folder backgrounds in Windows 7

Usually, if you open an explorer window in Windows 7, you're greeted with a familiar white window. If that's getting too boring, you can use Windows 7 Folder Background Changer. Apart from setting a photograph or color as your background, you can also change the color of the text or show shadows under text. Also, you needn't apply it one folder at a time; you can apply the same background to all sub-folders within a single folder.

User Account Control too annoying?

Have the user account control popups in Window 7 to confirm each and every action started to annoy you? If so then there's a simple way to disable them. Go to start, type "user account" in the search field and select the third option "change user account control settings". In the newly opened window, use the slider to set the notifications to any of the four levels that suit you with the "never notify" setting disabling it and you're done.

Customize your desktop Rainmeter

Rainmeter is a free desktop customization tool with which you can totally change the look of your windows PC. Compact applets, sidebar gadgets or even the dashboard widgets of the mac can be added and the best part is how little memory it consumes and has negative impact on performance. You can even keep track of RSS feeds, emails, weather forecasts and twitter feeds straight from the comfort of your desktop!

Collaborate within Office 2007

If you have Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, a free beta plugin called CircleDoc adds in-program, real-time collaboration. You can have colleagues sitting all over the world, looking at (and working on) the same PowerPoint presentation. Each 'collaborator' can also take snapshots of the work being done in each stage, in order to set a revert point. You can get CircleDoc for free. (Windows Only).

Windows 7 shortcuts

Unknown Windows 7 shortcuts

There are a lot of shortcuts in Windows 7 that use the Windows key. For example, holding the Windows key and clicking + will bring up the magnifier. You can then use + and - to zoom in or out. Windows + T cycles through thumbnails of all open windows. Windows + Spacebar makes every window transparent. And Windows + Left or Windows + Right will make the active window fill up one half of the screen.

Windows Calculator - date calculations

The calculator in Windows 7 can do more than just crunch numbers; it can crunch dates too. Just open up the calculator, click view and then click on date calculation (or simply hit the shortcut Ctrl+E with the calculator open). You can choose between calculating the difference between two dates or adding/subtracting days to a specific date.

Don't Send error reporting in Windows XP

Turn off error reporting in Windows XP

Since Windows XP support has officially been discontinued there is no point in sending error reports to Microsoft as they will never be fixed. Go to the control panel, open system, click on the advanced tab and finally click on error reporting for disabling options. No more pesky error reporting pop ups!

Stop Automatic Reboots in Windows

Reboots typically happen when Windows Update installs updates and requires a restart which invariably happens at the most inopportune moments and you end up losing your unsaved data.

Solving this is really easy.

Just go to control panel and select Windows Update. Now click on change settings and from the drop down menu select "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

The only time this won't work is when Windows needs to install critical updates but rest of the time you are safe from any abrupt reboots.

Secret Windows 7 'send to' menu

If you use Windows, you've probably used the 'send to' command; right clicking on a file and clicking 'send to', to send a file to a bluetooth device or a portable device for example. But if you press and hold the shift key, right click on a file and then go to the 'send to' menu option, you'll see a whole bunch of new options specific to your computer.

Task Manager in Windows
The Task Manager used to open through the infamous control+alt+del key combination but now it opens up the Windows Security Dialog Box for added security in Windows Vista onwards and XP systems which are part of a domain having fast user switching off. The easiest way to directly open up the task manager without navigating through the extra dialog menu or changing any settings is by pressing control+shift+escape.
